Central, Onehunga all square

ISPS Handa Chatham Cup finalists Central United and Onehunga Sports have drawn 1-1 in a low key appetizer for September’s showpiece clash at QBE Stadium.

The build-up to the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup final proved an interesting joust as the two protagonists went through the motions of a match with very little on the line.

Both teams used the match to blood youth but nevertheless Central United opened the scoring when veteran left back Takuya Iwata netted for the visitors after 21 minutes.

The champions were without skipper Joe Dawkins, Andrew Milne and Sean Lovemore, but Hiroshi Miyazawa’s shrewd decision to rest key players paid off with Boyd Curry scoring the equaliser on the hour mark.

The result means a fifth placed finish for last year’s champions Central United but their season remains alive with ISPS Handa Chatham Cup business set for September 10 at QBE Stadium.

Onehunga Sports final Lotto NRFL Premier Division match is away to Waitakere City FC on Saturday 2 September at Fred Taylor Park.
