D1: North Shore open up gap

Ross Langworthy’s goal gave North Shore United’s Lotto NRFL First Division campaign a major boost as they downed Melville United 1-0 today.

Langworthy, who scored a hat-trick on the opening day of the season, notched the winner midway through the first half to set the visitors back on their heels in what unfolded as a very tight clash.

North Shore United sit top after three rounds with maximum points while there is a logjam for second with Melville United, Ellerslie AFC, Western Springs all on six points with either one of Tauranga City United or Franklin United able to join them.

There was a first up win for Mount Albert Ponsonby after they fought out a five goal thriller with local rivals Metro FC. Lewis Black and Peter Wild with a brace got coach Scott McKay’s team off to a flier as the cancelled out first half goals by Jamie Shields and Jaryd Gray as they held on for a 3-2 win.

Oratia United also hit three goals in their 3-1 win over Hibiscus Coast. Anthony Lockton opened United’s account after just four minutes and Karlo Pavic doubled the lead eight minutes later. Mark Withers made sure of the result with Oratia’s third on the hour mark while Daniel Cyra netted a last minute consolation for the visitors.

Leo Berlim scored a goal in each half for Manukau City as they defeated Ellerslie AFC under lights at Michaels Avenue while an Andrew Blake winner just five minutes from time handed Western Springs a 1-0 victory over Waitemata FC at Seddong Field.

Tomorrow, Tauranga City United host Franklin United at Links Avenue in Mount Maunganui. The match kicks off at 3pm.
