De Jong to coach Ellerslie

Ellerslie AFC have appointed Fred De Jong as Head Coach of their Lotto NRFL Division One side for 2018.

The Club recently sought applications for the role of NRFL Men’s Premier Coach for 2018 and beyond. The Club’s Technical Director, Fred de Jong was originally tasked to handle the vetting and review of such applications. However, following his short term tenure in the role towards the end of the 2017 season, he had a change of heart and subsequently applied for the position himself. Thus, he was recused from the selection process.

A Coaching Sub-committee (four persons) was formed to review all applications , and interview short listed candidates, from both inside and outside the Club. The Sub-committee subsequently has made a recommendation to the Executive Committee, and this has recently been ratified.

The Club is excited to announce that Fred de Jong, a well known footballing identity and ex All White will take up the Premier Men’s NRFL Head Coach role in 2018 (and beyond) . He will be assisted by Terry Torrens, who has tasted success at a National level with our Junior/Youth Club teams, in previous years.

The Club congratulates both Fred and Terry on their appointments, and looks forward to the team’s future footballing success.

On behalf of the Club, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Wallace, Grant Marshall and Nick Russo, for their First Team coaching efforts over the past three seasons. Each has exhibited a wonderful loyalty and commitment to Ellerslie AFC, and this particular team, which both the players and our wider Club membership has appreciated. We hope that they, and the unsuccessful applicants, will remain involved with the Club in other capacities in the years to come.
