Determination high for Giles

After missing out on the first leg through suspension, Beachlands Maraetai attacker Mark Giles is determined more than ever to make an impact for his team.

Beachlands succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of fellow promotion seekers Cambridge last weekend and Giles, who had to watch on as a spectator, felt his side did not play to their potential.

“I didn’t think we really showed up [last Saturday],” Giles said.

“The whole team didn’t really fire up, it was a big pitch and we failed to use our strengths.”

With Giles already out after picking up a red card in their Counties Cup Final the weekend prior, another big blow was dealt just before kick off with Zane Christiansen picking up a calf injury. Giles will be back in action this weekend at John Kerkhof Park while Christiansen will be replaced in the match day squad by Brian Preston.

And there are no surprises how determined Beachlands’ leading goal scorer is to make an impact on Saturday.

“I’m real determined to make a big impact,” Giles said.

“I let the boys down in the first game having to sit out after my mistake in the Cup game.

“So I am real determined and I want to help the team get those four goals for our team and get the win.”

For Beachlands, gaining promotion would create history for their club something they have already created once this week after claiming the Tom McNab Trophy for 2017.

“It will be amazing to make more history for this club.

“To get a small club like Beachlands into the Northern League will be a huge achievement.

“We will be ready and prepared for a fight on Saturday; They’re a good side so it’s going to be a tough game but I think we can do it, it’s definitely doable if we all turn up to the game.”

The match kicks off at 2pm at John Kerkhof Park, Cambridge, Saturday 30 September.
