Fairy-tale Dream on the Cards for Waiheke

The previous two seasons for Waiheke have seen an on-going trend carried out by the team from Waiheke island, who earned promotion from the AFF/NFF Conference League back in 2016 and then carried out a second placed finished in the Lotto NRFL Men’s Division Two in 2017.

This season, Waiheke find themselves in a good position in what would be the fairytale dream for the side in red. Currently third on the table in the Lotto NRFL Men’s Division One, back-to-back promotions are still a possibility for Waiheke and what a story that would be for the Malcolm McPherson coached side and their journey to the Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier Division.

“It’s been a strong season so far from us, we’ve really pushed ourselves to get to where we want to be, but the mission isn’t over yet” McPherson said

“It will be good for the club if we get there, but we’ve got to put our heads down and start working hard in these last four crucial matches.”

However, things have looked dull and dark in recent weeks for Waiheke United, falling to a newly-reformed Forrest Hill Milford United side at home by 1-0 and then dropping points against relegation contenders, Ellerslie last weekend by a disappointing 3-0 defeat.

With only four games remaining in the league and three points behind second place, North Shore United, the race is on for Waiheke United to achieve their ultimate goal for promotion.

But a stern test awaits them this weekend, as top of the league Melville United, who currently remain undefeated in the Lotto NRFL Men’s Division Two, will welcome the team from Waiheke Island, in what proves to be a very crucial game for both the WaiBOP based outfit and Waiheke United.

“The game this weekend is a must-win for us” McPherson said.

“We understand that Melville will be a tough challenge, but we dropped points last week against Ellerslie and we can’t afford to do so this week.”

“They’re ready to go out and win the league, so we’ve got to be ready to go out and get promotion.”

The match is scheduled to kick off at 3pm at Gower Park
