Family bonds hold strong

The Mountain Men take aim at promotion as anticipation builds.

Onehunga-Mangere United’s reputation as a family oriented club could be its most distictive asset as they chase promotion from the Lotto NRFL Second Division.

New coach John Bennett is eager to succeed and is so far happy with the signings he’s made to bolster his squad.

“A new coach means new faces and right now we’re trying to make sure our squad gels quickly and comes together.

“I wanted to make sure the team culture was positive and our aim is to build from there.

“When the going gets tough its important to have a squad that is prepared to dig deep for each other.

“Our bond is very strong and almost family-like so thats been very pleasing,” Bennett said.

Onehunga-Mangere United have picked up some handy signings with goalkeeper Danyon Dvorak, 18, a major coup.

Standing at well over six foot three inches in old money, Dvorak has all the attributes to be a key figure at the club according to Bennett.

“Danyon has got a great build for a goalkeeper and a physical presence,” he adds.

Another key signing is John Curwen, a player Bennett picked up from Dunedin Technical.

Curwen played as a defender for Dunedin Technical in the Southern Premier League and alongside Dvorak could be an important acquisition.

The other new face is Myron Manickum.

“We’re lucky to pick up John. He’s got a lot of experience in the Southern leagues that could be valuable for us.

“Myron is a name most people associate with futsal but he’s also an exciting football player and very handy to have,” Bennett said.

While Onehunga-Mangere United have picked up key signings to strengthen their squad, a discussion with Bennett reveals his philosophy and focus remain firmly set on the strength of the collective over the individual.

“Every team needs a bit of luck to get success. I’ve always been ambitious as a coach, maybe over ambitious.

“But promotion is a target for us and with a bit of luck we can get there.

“We’ll aim to be as competitive as possible,” he said.
