Hunt for best form continues for OMU

Brian Turner only thinks of one thing when it comes to Onehunga Mangere United’s season so far and that’s breaking the mold to his side’s run of mixed results.

Amassing only seven points in their last five matches, the need for consistency is becoming a real issue, with the side set to square up in some season defining matches over the next 3-4 weeks.

“We expect to be putting in some pretty good shifts over the next three or four weeks as we’ve got some pretty hard games coming up, we’re playing Takapuna soon and they’re top of the table, we’re playing Cambridge away too” head coach, Brian Turner said.

“We’ve got to turn up every week and put in decent performances and we’re only 60% of the way to achieving our goals.”

Before lining up, in what proves to be a challenging set fixtures for any side in the Lotto NRFL Men’s Division Two, Turner is hoping his side begin their string of form against second placed, Bucklands Beach.

“You have to give them the respect that they deserve, and I do believe that we’re a totally different proposition, leading into the second-round games than we were at the beginning of the year.”

“They were reasonably well organized, and they were strong in the defensive half and impressed me in the midfield and they’ve kicked on and they’re still second in the league, they’ve beaten teams by a few, so we have to be on our best form on the day to get any sort of result.”

One player making consistent performances for OMU is Nineteen-year-old, Fergus Connolly, who’s been between the sticks all season.

Developing his ability at Auckland Grammar School last year, Connolly was brought into the side through a recommendation by Jimmy Hogg.

“He has been truly outstanding in the last seven or eight games and we are fortunate to have him as our goal keeper, he’s a good lad, he’s sensible, he’s intelligent and he works really hard at training” Turner said.

“It’s great that he’s playing for us but moving forward he’s got all the attributes that he needs to play at a higher level and he will only get better.”

Onehunga Mangere United will take on Bucklands Beach at Lloyd Elsmore Park at 3pm on Saturday.
