Kings extend winning streak

Three Kings United have extended their Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier Division winning streak to 27 matches after defeating Glenfield Rovers 2-1 on Good Friday.

The reigning champs opened up the scoring in the 29th minute from a trademark Paige Satchell run. The Football Ferns Development Programme (FFDP) squad member raced down the right hand wing before picking out Hannah Blake to tap home from close range.

Blake then turned provider in the 42nd minute, latching onto a delightful ball played over Rovers’ defence by Rebecca Burrows before sliding a pass into the stride of Estelle Harrison who was able to tuck the ball past Kaitlyn Savage.

Tessa Berger pulled one back in the 53rd minute having been played through by Katie Rood but that was all Andrew Clay’s side could find despite going close twice in the last few minutes through Berger and a Serena Murrihy header.

Kings’ captain Jessie Mathews believes the score line reflected the game.

“I thought it was a really good game, it was quite even and quite open at times as well.

“It was well contested but we performed how we wanted too and came out on top so I’m pretty happy with it.”

Ahead of next weekend’s match against Norwest, Mathews is hoping her side can provide a complete 90 minute performance.

“The first part of the second half we dropped the intensity a bit so next week we will definitely be looking for a full 90-minute performance where we can stay on top.”

The Women’s Premier Division saw two other matches take place on Good Friday with the WaiBOP derby between Hamilton Wanderers and Claudelands Rovers having been postponed.

Out west, Mauro Donoso’s Eastern Suburbs side put seven unanswered goals past Norwest to hand Chris Accot’s side their first defeat of the season.

FFDP squad member Aimee Phillips ran riot scoring a hat trick inside the first half hour before grabbing a fourth in the second spell. Fellow FFDP squad member Grace Jale also netted while young Amber Whitley grabbed a quick fire brace in the final ten minutes.

Up north, Forrest Hill Milford grabbed their first win of the season with another FFDP squad member grabbing a first half hat-trick in Sam Tawharu. Lily Jervis and Jasmine Waldren chipped in with a goal each either side of Tawharu’s treble.

Western Springs had the round three bye.
