Leaders eager for Waiheke challenge

The only undefeated side in the Lotto NRFL first division face a challenge from an in-form unit this weekend as Melville United travel to Onetangi Domain to clash swords with Waiheke United.

Melville United co-coach Michael Mayne is excited for the challenge ahead and understands the dangers of playing a side like Waiheke, who have won three straight matches, who can hurt any team in the league.

“The match against Waiheke is going to be an exciting game,” Mayne said.

“They’re a club that’ve obviously done very well the last couple of seasons and we’re just looking forward to getting out there and obviously we’re going to try really hard to get away with the result when we do get out there.”

“Neither team will just sit back and try to survive the match, I think both teams are going to go at each other and this should make a pretty decent match.”

Mayne is wary of Saturday’s opponent, knowing what is at the disposal of coach Malcolm McPherson with the islanders having scored 11 and conceded three in their winning run.

“Waiheke have got a handful of very good players, experienced players, dangerous players for this league, they’ve got a good coach in Malcolm who’s coached at a reasonable level and he’s one that we know a lot about.”

Melville are coming off the back of a solid 6-0 win over promotion hopefuls Forrest Hill and Mayne says their good form is the result of detailed work done on the training ground.

“A lot of hard work has gone into how our season as panned out so far, we play a system, which is an attacking system and in-order to do that, we obviously have to work quite hard on our defensive shape and how we want to defend, so a lot of work on the grass during the week has helped us set that record of attack on every team we play.”

“Between the defensive unit and our midfield, we’re getting job done and at the same time we’re stopping teams from scoring regularly and that’s helped us to pull off the result and get things right so far in the season.”

The match will kick off at Onetangi Hill – Waiheke Island at 3pm.
