PREVIEW | Lotto NRFL Men’s RD 13/14

Confidence is high in the Takapuna camp ahead of this weekend’s clash against Northland, with Joe Daw’s side coming off two victories over Queens Birthday Weekend.

A win for Daw’s side will push them up to at least fourth on the Division Two ladder but former Canterbury United Dragon’s player and Takapuna youngster, Renta Yamamoto is aware of how tough the task will be.

“Northland are a strong team, who have a defined style of how they like to play football and they do it very well,” Yamamoto said.

“We know it will be a tough game as they don’t stop for 90 minutes and to add to this, they have had a good first half to the season.”

Yamamoto believes every member of the squad has contributed this far, with Monday’s Chatham Cup victory over a Division One side really showing what the team is about.

“Every player in the team has been superb.

“The two wins over the long weekend was a great team effort and winning the Cup game in extra time really showed our character.”

Ngongotaha, the only other Lotto NRFL Division Two side to progress to the next round of the Chatham Cup, welcome Onehunga Mangere to Stembridge road while Mangere United and Papatoetoe will both look to grab three points when they face off at Centre Park, with both sides picking up zero points over Queens Birthday Weekend.

Rounding out Division Two action, Te Atatu and Papakura City are both in for a stern test against Fencibles United and Waiheke United respectively while Albany United face a trip south to Claudelands Rovers.

In Division One, it is first against last with Western Springs hosting Metro under lights at seddon fields at 5:15pm while 15 minutes earlier, Ellerslie and Hibiscus Coast kick off at Michaels Ave.

Manukau City, who endured a heartbreaking extra time loss as the hands of Waitakere City in the Chatham Cup travel to Mt Albert Ponsonby’s Anderson Park while Tauranga City United face a trip north to Oratia United.

Two teams still in the cup square off at Gower Park with Franklin United making the trip south to meet Melville United. North Shore United and Waitemata round out Saturday’s Division One action.

Headlining the Premier League action is front runners, Onehunga Sports’ clash against fourth place Bay Olympic at Waikaraka Park and Glenfield Rovers match against Central United.

Central have been boosted in recent weeks by Auckland City players and will be sure to give third place Rovers a good test.

Hamilton Wanderers host East Coast Bays, where a win for the visitors will see them leap frog their opponents while Manurewa and Forrest Hill Milford host Eastern Suburbs and Birkenhead United respectively.

Completing the weekend’s Lotto NRFL Men’s action is Waitakere City taking on Three Kings United at Fred Taylor Park.
