Western Springs off the mark

Western Springs picked up their first points of the 2017 Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier Division with a hard fought 1-0 victory over a youthful Forrest Hill Milford side on Friday evening.

A Maisy Dewell goal in the 13th minute was all that separated the two sides.

Springs’ captain Rebecca O’Neill was understandably happy with picking up the three points.

“I’m really proud of the effort the girls put in tonight,” says O’Neill.

“We probably put in our best full 90 minutes of the season so far.

“It’s just good to get a win after a couple of disappointing losses, so, I’m pretty happy.”

O’Neill hopes this victory will spur her team on as they search for the league and cup double.

“Our goal this season is to win the league, and obviously the cup too.

“We just have to kick on from here and keep working hard and keep doing what we do well – being positive going forward, scoring more goals and defending the way we do.”

On Sunday, reigning champions Three Kings United extended their unbeaten record to 28 matches, ableit only just.

It was a come from behind victory for Kings, who found themselves 4-1 down at the break.

Football Fern Jane Barnett netted a first half hat trick while Cara Lonergan also chipped in with a goal for Norwest. Paige Satchell netted in the first half for Alan Hindson’s side.

Kings came out firing in the second half and put four unanswered goals past Norwest with the winner coming via new signing Ally Toailoa three minutes into stoppage time.

In the two remaining fixtures, Eastern Suburbs and Claudelands Rovers each picked up big wins.

Suburbs put eight past Hamilton Wanderers, seven of which came in the second spell.

Grace Jale led the way with a hat trick while Jacqui Hand and Tayla O’Brien each grabbed a brace. Young Aimee Waters also got on the scoresheet. Leanna Ryan netted a consolation goal for Wanderers in the 74th minute.

Claudelands also netted eight times against Northland with New Zealand U-20 rep Sophie Stewart Hobbs netting a hat trick. Ella Golding grabbed a brace while Michaela Foster, Helen Talbot and Leah Gubb also all got on the scoresheet.
