With Three Kings United amassing 13 points in their last five matches, the challenge seems like an uphill battle for Western Springs, as the two sides are set to meet on Friday in the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League.

But with both sides battling for a 2-2 stalemate last time round, Western Springs gaffer, Matthew Upton is positive his side can do one better this time around.

“That performance was one of our better ones, we played really well, honestly, I think we should’ve won the game, we had a lot of chances to score, which we just didn’t put away.”

Western Spring’s coach Matt Upton.

“This season Alan Hindson has put together a really good squad, a bit of experience mixed with the younger talent that he’s got, and they’re not players that our players can’t compete with as well, so it should be quite a good game of football with some talented players at either end.”

“In every match this season, we’ve been playing quite well, but we’re just not having that goal scoring touch to put things away, so technically, we’re at that level, but we’re just lacking the ability to score goals so we’re hoping to do this against Three Kings United this week.”

Last week, New Zealand Football announced the Football Ferns squad that will take on Japan in Wellington next month.

Western Springs trio, Sarah Morton, Nadia Olla and Liz Anton were all called up to represent the country, with Olla and Morton attending their first Football Ferns camp.

“It’s amazing, especially for Nadia [Olla] and Sarah [Morton], it’ll be the first time they’ve gone into camp as well, so it’s a really awesome thing for them.”

Western Spring’s, Sarah Morton representing New Zealand at the U-19 OFC Women’s Championship.

“It’s great for the club as well, because people still see them around at the club, and the younger girls especially are just proud to see them and know that there are girls that can come from Western Springs and go play for the New Zealand team, so it gives everyone a lift.”

The match between Western Springs and Three Kings United will kick off at 7:30pm at Seddon Fields on Friday.
